Addressing the health status of the women during pregnancy, child birth and the postpartum period is an important step to reduce maternal mortality. Improving maternal health is one of the eight United Nations' Millennium Developmental Goals, targeting a reduction of 75% in the number of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth by 2015.
